Pages stuck on page 2: what to fix first

When you rank on page 2, you are close. Here is how to prioritise title, content, and internal links without rewriting everything.

Page 2 is frustrating because the traffic is almost there. You are visible, but not enough to matter.

The good news: these pages are often the highest-ROI fixes on your site.

Check position and CTR together

A page ranking at position 11 with strong impressions is a different problem from position 18 with weak CTR.

| Signal | Likely issue | First fix | |--------|--------------|-----------| | Position 8–15, low CTR | Title or meta description | Rewrite for intent and clarity | | Position 15–20, decent CTR | Content depth or links | Expand the page, add internal links | | Impressions dropping | Competition or freshness | Update examples, date, and structure |

Search Console gives you both numbers. Use them together, not in isolation.

Fix the snippet before the body

Most page-2 wins come from SERP presentation:

  • Put the primary keyword early in the title
  • Make the meta description answer the query directly
  • Match search intent (comparison, how-to, tool, pricing)

You can often move a page one or two spots without touching the full article.

Strengthen internal links

Google needs context for why a page matters. Link to your stuck pages from:

  • High-traffic pages that share the same topic
  • Your homepage or product overview if the page is core
  • Related blog posts (yes, this is why you want a blog)

Two or three intentional internal links can shift rankings faster than another net-new post.

When to rewrite vs refresh

Refresh when the page ranks but underperforms: update headings, add a section, improve examples.

Rewrite when intent is wrong: you wrote a feature page but people wanted a comparison, or vice versa.

growseo surfaces these as "Improve this page" actions so you are not digging through rows of Search Console data every week.

Your next step

Pick one URL stuck between positions 8 and 15. Update the title and meta this week. Add one internal link from your strongest related page. Measure again in 14 days.

Small, targeted changes beat full rewrites most of the time.
